German Cockroach Control

German Cockroach

Despite its name, German cockroaches actually originate from Asia, not Germany. They are by far the most common pest cockroach species. In addition to being a nuisance, German cockroaches are capable of transmitting and spreading several human illnesses, including at least one parasitic protozoan. German cockroaches can be found all over the world.

BEHAVIOR

German cockroaches are found throughout structures but show a preference for warm (70°F) and humid places. They’re usually found in kitchens and bathrooms, but infestations often occur in any room where people eat and drink. Any crack or crevice located near a source of food or water is prime harborage. Cockroaches spend about 75% of their time in or near these harborages. They become particularly active when they come out to feed at night.

German cockroaches usually get into buildings via paper products or paper packaging. They sneak into grocery bags, cardboard boxes, or drink cartons and then crawl out once after they’re carried inside a structure. Many roaches also hide inside appliances or fixtures such as refrigerators, televisions, or microwaves. They’re also known to migrate from building-to-building on warm evenings, provided the buildings are close together. Although it’s uncommon, German cockroaches can survive outdoors during the warm months. They’ll feed on almost anything including all kinds of food, soap, paste, glue, and toothpaste.

CONTROL AND PREVENTION

The best way to prevent roach infestations is to thoroughly inspect boxes, bags, furniture, and appliances before bringing them into your home or workplace. The best way to remove roach infestations is to:

  1. Implement good sanitation and food storage practices
  2. Call in pest management specialists
  3. Refrain from using over-the-counter insecticides. The unskilled use of repellent insecticides actually tends to result in larger, more scattered cockroach infestations.

APPEARANCE

Adult German cockroaches measure 1/2 to 5/8" long. They’re light brown to tan except for 2 dark, parallel stripes on the pronotal shield (the back, behind the head). Females have a broader abdomen than males. German cockroaches are not good fliers, but use their wings like a parachute to break falls and facilitate jumps.

PROFESSIONAL CONTROL

At least 95% of the cockroach population must be eliminated during the initial service, or the maintenance program will usually fail. Plunkett’s Pest Control technicians utilize insecticide baits, non-repellent insecticide formulations, and food-lure pest monitors (sticky traps) to destroy and capture German cockroaches. Baits are particularly effective, but correct placement along structural junctures and in cracks and crevices is essential.

Incorporating insect growth regulators (IGRs) and pest monitoring into the service helps with long-term control. In severe infestations, we may also use pest vacuum cleaner to quickly remove cockroaches from harborages. Vacuuming helps us removing a significant portion of the population quickly. Whatever the size or severity of the roach infestation, we take the steps necessary to wipe it out completely.

If you’re struggling with a German cockroach infestation right now, give Plunkett’s Pest Control a call right away. We have the knowledge, tools, and expertise to drive your roaches out and keep them out for good.
