Mosquitoes

What Is A Mosquito?

Mosquitoes in Minnesota range in size from about 3/8 to ½ inch in length, have slender legs and wings with scales unlike flies.  Female mosquitoes’ mouthparts form a long piercing-sucking proboscis while male mosquitoes do not have the ability to pierce skin.  In Minnesota there are 50 mosquito species and are often considered the unofficial “state bird”.

Why Do I Have Them?

Mosquitoes are attracted to standing water.  Pools, bird baths and feeders as well as clogged gutters are ideal for breeding purposes.  Female mosquitoes suck human and animal blood and will fly several miles for a blood meal.  Male mosquitoes, on the other hand, feed on plant nectar and other sugar sources.

Are They Dangerous?

Mosquitoes are nuisance pests that can ruin an outdoor event very quickly.  More importantly they can be dangerous for people.  They are known transmitters of several diseases and health conditions including West Nile Virus and encephalitis.

How Do I Get Rid Of Mosquitoes?

Getting rid of mosquitoes is virtually impossible.  However reducing breeding sites and treatment can greatly reduce the number of mosquitoes around your property.  Plunkett’s Pest Control can provide relief from mosquitoes for a special outdoor party you may be planning.
