U of M Twin Cities IPM Evaluation By Plunkett’s Pest Control

The University of Minnesota asked us to quantify the amount of pesticides we used on the entire Minneapolis campus during the summer of 2008, July, August and September.  Two technicians service the Minneapolis campus, Ray Dawson and Nick Adams. In total they spend, on average, three days per week on the Minneapolis campus. The Minneapolis campus is a big place: over 26 million square feet, 163 buildings over 360 acres along both banks of the Mississippi river including 8 dorms, 5 sports stadiums, several animal research labs, 2 cancer clinics, and dozens of old, ivy covered buildings that the mice would love to call home.  Those areas included kitchens, mechanical rooms, animal research labs, ivy covered buildings and the farms. As you can see from the results the amount of interior sprays used where faculty or students could contact them for the whole campus over three months could fit into a Coke bottle with room to spare.

The grand total of all pesticides and rodenticides used by both Ray and Nick over three months is:

Exterior Spray treatment = 1 ½ gallons.

Interior Spray treatment = 19 ounces

Interior Granular bait (in mech. Rooms & steam tunnels) = 24 ounces

Dust (into sewers) = 97 ounces

Ant Bait Stations = 8 bait pucks

Tracking Powder into wall voids = 4 ounces

Rodent Bait = 377 blocks
