In response to the record breaking heat wave in Minnesota, Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest, property owners are noticing an increase in pest problems in and around their homes and businesses.  Like many of us who have sought refuge in air conditioned rooms or in front of fans, insects and rodents are looking for relief from the dangerous heat and drought conditions.   Because of the surge in pest activity and no clear end to the soaring temps, Plunkett’s Pest Control would like to offer a few tips to help deter ants, cockroaches, spiders and mice as the temperatures continue to rise.

Prevent Pests From Getting In

To stop spiders, mice and many other insects and rodents from entering:

  • Seal, caulk or weather stripe around windows, cable lines, dryer vents and door frames

  • Screen vents and weep-holes with mesh screening and make sure to repair damaged roof soffit

  • Repair any cracks or crevices in your home’s foundation- a mouse can squeeze its entire body through a hole the size of a human pinkie, so leave no opening to chance

  • Replace or repair any damaged window or door screens

Please Don’t Feed The Pests

Pests need to eat and drink too, so please remember to:

  • Clean up spills and crumbs from countertops and floors immediately.  Just a couple of toast crumbs and a small drop of lemonade can provide pests, especially ants, enough incentive to keep coming back

  • Keep food stored in air-tight containers or in the fridge

  • Do not keep dirty dishes in the sink overnight, cockroaches are nocturnal and will find your dirty, dinner plate in no time

  • Keep trash cans sealed and remove trash bags daily

  • Keep pet dishes free of food except at dinner time and wash them daily

  • Repair any leaks in your home such as under sinks and around faucets.  Leaks provide the perfect watering hole for all summertime pests

Eliminate Hiding Spots

Pests are masters at going undetected, so homeowners must be diligent and:

  • Keep clothes and other clutter picked up off the floors.  These cluttered areas provide the perfect hiding places for spiders and mice

  • Clean up newspapers, magazines, piles of paper bags, cardboard boxes and rags, pests, especially cockroaches love to hide in these items

Unfortunately, this stretch of weather is here to stay, at least for a little longer and if all of your best efforts to keep pests from invading your home seem to be failing, contact Plunkett’s Pest Control.  We offer residential pest control that will get rid of spiders and tiny ants in the kitchen as well as many other insects and rodents that may be seeking cooler temperatures in your home.
