Follow these tips to help keep your next picnic pest free!

One of the exciting parts about summer is the ability to sit outside to enjoy a meal. Picnics are a great way to enjoy a beautiful spot and good food with your family and friends. But what about when stinging insects and ants decide to partake as well? These pests make picnics more of a headache than anything else. They can also lead to painful stings and bites which could land you at the doctor’s office, cutting your picnic short. To help keep pests away from your next picnic, here are some tips from the Minneapolis pest control experts at Plunkett’s:

1. Check your picnic basket

Most stinging insects and ants are attracted to sugar which means sodas and lemonade are a magnet and should be avoided. You also want to check your food choices and again avoid sweet foods that will signal in the pest troops. Even though summer and sweets go well together, if you want a pest free picnic you will have to reconsider your food and beverage choices.

2. Find a pest free area

When picking out the perfect picnic location you may have a favorite place in mind. But if you get there and realize that pest activity is present, you will want to move to another spot. Even if you followed the first tip by packing to avoid pests, if the pests are already there then you can be sure they will crash your picnic. Look for an area that is not swarming with insects and has no signs of ant nests in the ground. Then you can lay out the blanket and get things started.

3. Cover up!

There are two things to note here. First, you want to make sure that all of your food and beverages have lids that close tightly. When you are done eating and drinking make sure to put the lid back on so that you are not leaving food out as a magnet for a potential stinging insect or ant problem. Second, protect yourself from pests by covering up with proper clothing that keeps the skin protected and maybe even an insect repellent if it is especially buggy out.

By following these pest free picnic tips you can enjoy all the greatness of a picnic minus the stings and bites of some stinging insects and ants.
